Diaspora Journey

The diaspora journey traced through the two novels begins in India and moves across continents and generations. From India, members of the family migrate to East Africa, principally Uganda and Kenya, before later generations establish new lives in Britain and Canada.

Each stage of the journey represents more than a change of country. It brings encounters with different cultures, languages and social expectations, while raising questions about identity and belonging. The novels show how family traditions are retained, adapted or sometimes abandoned as successive generations establish themselves in new societies.

Taken together, the journeys from India to East Africa and subsequently to Britain and Canada provide a human perspective on the wider history of empire and decolonisation. Through the experiences of one family across several generations, the novels explore the lasting effects of migration and the creation of new identities within the post-colonial diaspora.
